Know the Wildlife you will Encounter on a Crete Holiday

The Greek island of Crete is said to be the birthplace of Zeus, who was born in a cave hidden away from his child-eating father. But these days the caves are less likely to be home to King of Gods, and morel likely to contain native Crete wildlife. So when on a Crete holiday, why not take a trip away from the beach and see some animals you may never have seen before.

Bearded Vulture

One of the rarest raptors in the world, it is thought that Crete is the best place to spot them in the whole Balkans region, although the fact that there are said to be only around 10 pairs means that you will still have a bit of a task on your hands. They naturally are drawn to mountains regions so maybe it is best to head to the White Mountains and take in a trek along the gorges there to stand a chance of seeing them.

Non-Venomous Snakes

Any mention of snakes is one way to get tourists to run a mile, but holidays in Crete needn’t be cancelled on account of these snakes, as all four species of snake here are perfectly safe and help to keep populations of rodents and spiders down – which is always a plus. In low levels you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the beautifully coloured leopard snake, which can grow to a meter long. It is known as the ‘house snake’ in northern parts of the island as it seeks out covered areas, but do not worry, it will not creep into busy tourist resorts! The Balkan Whip snake, dice snake and cat snake are also common in areas of Crete which could potentially be spotted on walks through Crete’s various terrains.

Caretta Caretta Sea Turtle

Commonly known as the loggerhead turtle, if you get your snorkel out around the areas of Chania, Rethymnon and Messara Bay you may have a chance of spotting one. However it is worth remembering that these turtles are an endangered species and are under threat from Crete’s bustling tourism industry, so if you do get lucky and spot one when on a Crete holiday, only admire from afar.
